Decade of Guyana: Rapid Success Fuels Rapid Transformation

Tuesday, 5 May
Room 306
Panel
Ten years ago, ExxonMobil along with co-venturers Hess and CNOOC logged a world-class oil discovery with the Liza-1 well in waters offshore the South American country of Guyana. Very few companies could have drilled this well given a host of complexities and difficulties. The commercial risk was as high as the chance of success was low. However, through perseverance and strong partnership with the country of Guyana, history was made on May 10, 2015, with the discovery of the Liza Field. Ten years after the first discovery, Guyana’s oil industry has ramped up at an unprecedented pace from zero barrels to 650,000 barrels per day in less than six years after the onset of production. Production from the vast oil fields in the Stabroek block is catalyzing transformative growth across multiple sectors in Guyana. The influx of revenue is not only driving the expansion of the oil and gas industry but also accelerating major infrastructure developments, including roads, ports, and utilities. This economic surge is attracting global investment, creating job opportunities, and unlocking new potential across the country. Beyond energy, Guyana’s development is fostering advancements in regulatory frameworks, government relations, healthcare, education, and technology. These changes are helping build a more diversified and resilient national economy, positioning Guyana as a rising hub of prosperity in the region and the fastest growing economy in the world.
