Radical Offshore Renewables: Floating Offshore Wind Turbines, Data Centers, and Ocean Thermal Power
Tuesday, 5 May
Room 600
Technical Session
Offshore renewables are rapidly expanding into unconventional domains, reshaping not only how we generate energy but also how we apply it. This session describes the Floating Nuclear Data Center concept, where modular barge platforms integrate small modular reactors and advanced cooling systems to deliver scalable, carbon-free digital infrastructure. Offshore green hydrogen hubs are presented as a decarbonization pathway for oil and gas assets in the UKCS. Floating wind innovation is showcased through the VISI Spar Floating Offshore Wind Turbine, a novel 16 MW design validated under typhoon conditions. OTEC (Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion) offers a clean baseload power alternative to imported fossil fuels for small island nations and can be a renewable subsea power source for ultra-deepwater pumps and tiebacks. Finally, attend to learn how wave spectra analysis can be improved through neural networks, and new life can be breathed into aging structures with slipover platforms. Together, these contributions highlight a radical new vision for offshore renewables—powering data, hydrogen, floating infrastructure, and the deepwater frontier.
